Record #111786:

Evolution of ice cover roughness / George D. Ashton, Jon Zufelt.

Title: Evolution of ice cover roughness / George D. Ashton, Jon Zufelt.
Author(s): Ashton, George D.
Zufelt, Jon.
Date: 1991.
Publisher: New York: American Society of Civil Engineers
In: Cold Regions Engineering. Proceedings of the Sixth International Specialty Conference ... the Sheraton North Country Inn, West Lebanon, NH, February 26-28, 1991. (1991.),
Abstract: Freeze-, melt-, and depositional smoothing of initially rough floating river-ice cover are identified, driven by, respectively, low air temperatures, slightly above-freezing water temperatures, and transport and deposit of small ice pieces beneath ice cover. Estimates of rates at which these mechanisms occur have been made, and, whilst still lacking in field verification, appear to be consistent with magnitudes observed in field.
