Abstract: Prepared with range of density values typical of below-water fill for winter-constructed Arctic islands and causeways. Triaxial compression consolidated-drained tests were carried out to estimate island/causeway strength. Two experimental methods developed successfully: backsaturating compacted frozen chunks of gravel and silty sand with sea water at its freezing temperature, and depositing frozen chunks of gravel and silty sand in sea-water column maintained at its freezing temperature.
