Effects of forests near the timberline on avalanche formation / H. Gubler, J. Rychetnik.
Title: | Effects of forests near the timberline on avalanche formation / H. Gubler, J. Rychetnik. |
Author(s): | Gubler, H. Rychetnik, J. |
Date: | 1991. |
Publisher: | Wallingford, Oxfordshire: IAHS Press |
In: | Snow, hydrology and forests in high alpine areas. Proceedings of an international symposium held during the 20th General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics at Vienna, 11-24 August 1991. (1991.), |
Abstract: | Decay of subalpine forests may cause new potential avalanche release zones. Measurements and observations made in spruce and larch stands near timberline on north-facing slope at 2000 m a.s.l. (typical stands for formation of extreme dry slab avalanches). Discusses formation of slab avalanches, minimum size conditions required by snow mechanics, and critical avalanche size for extreme events. Compared to open-field situation, additional conditions that limit formation of slabs in forests are: distribution, shape and species of trees, other vegetation, and formation and metamorphism of snow cover under modified conditions for mass and energy exchange with atmosphere. |
