Measuring the dihedral angle of water at a grain boundary in ice by an optical diffraction method / Michael E.R. Walford, John F. Nye.

Title: Measuring the dihedral angle of water at a grain boundary in ice by an optical diffraction method / Michael E.R. Walford, John F. Nye.

Abstract: Optical measurements made on water lenses which form under pressure at grain boundaries in polycrystalline ice. Monochromatic light from point source is focused by lenses, but, because these are microscopic in size, image is blurred by diffraction. Diffraction pattern observed under microscope was compared with computed diffraction pattern to deduce dihedral angle at rim of each lens. This gives ratio of grain-boundary energy to that of ice-water interface. Most sensitive measurements are those made on rings of virtual diffraction pattern formed on object side of lens.
