Saeters in the Norse Eastern Settlement of Østerbygd in southwest Greenland / Svend Erik Albrethsen.
Title: | Saeters in the Norse Eastern Settlement of Østerbygd in southwest Greenland / Svend Erik Albrethsen. |
Author(s): | Albrethsen, Svend Erik. |
Date: | 1991. |
In: | Acta Borealia. (1991.), Vol. 8(1) (1991) |
Abstract: | Includes brief history of investigation of Eastern Settlement. By 1986 408 sites with one or more Norse ruins had been found, mainly in relatively easily accessible terrain from 0 to 200 m a.s.l. Scandinavian archaeological project began in 1974, based on Qodlortoq valley; new sites (interpreted by author as saeters/shielings) were found up to 400 m a.s.l. Forty-four sites are identified as probable saeters, and attempt is made to classify them as full, milking, or hay-making saeters, but further scientific and archaeological evidence is necessary to confirm their role in Greenland. |
