Record #110951:
Hunting on land and at sea and fishing in medieval Norse Greenland / C.L. Vebaek.
Title: | Hunting on land and at sea and fishing in medieval Norse Greenland / C.L. Vebaek. |
Author(s): | Vebaek, C. L. |
Date: | 1991. |
In: | Acta Borealia. (1991.), Vol. 8(1) (1991) |
Abstract: | Discussion of various forms of hunting (of reindeer and house mice, inter alia) and fishing, based on written sources and zoological and archaeological finds. Very few Norse implements have been found; author assumes that same tackle and methods as in Norway and Iceland continued to be used. Finds indicate that Norse did not learn anything from Eskimos about hunting of Arctic animals, especially in respect of tackle for sealing (e.g. harpoons), nor how to use kayaks or other skin boats, but this "does not seem to have played any role in extinction of Norse population in medieval Greenland". |
Notes: | Acta Borealia. Vol. 8(1) :5-14 (1991). |
