Abstract: Registrations were made throughout Svalbard, 1982-85. Records of casual observations, 1970-85, were collected in fauna database. Most important breeding grounds were found between Bellsund and Isfjorden. Moulting takes place along western coast of Spitsberegen in July-August, and large flocks are found at outlet of Isfjorden, in Bellsund, and between Hornsund and Sørkapp at this time of year. Minimum and maximum population size in August is estimated at about 2,500 and 4,000-5,000 individuals respectively.
