| Abstract: | Studied during three breeding seasons, 1982-84, in colony on Mietheholmen, which was inaccessible to Arctic fox [Alopex lagopus] after late spring break-up of surrounding sea ice. Egg laying started after island was free of ice. Main predator was glaucous gull [Larus hyperboreus]. Total of 41.5, 77.9 and 77.9% of all eggs laid were subject to predation or were lost in other ways during 25-day incubation period in 1982-84 seasons respectively. Lowest predation rate was registered in most densely populated parts of colony. All predation observed occurred while female was away resting on sea. |
