Record #110946:
Influence of sea ice on nesting density in the Common Eider Somateria mollissima in Svalbard / Howard Parker, Fridtjof Mehlum.
Title: | Influence of sea ice on nesting density in the Common Eider Somateria mollissima in Svalbard / Howard Parker, Fridtjof Mehlum. |
Author(s): | Parker, Howard. Mehlum, Fridtjof. |
Date: | 1991. |
In: | Norsk Polarinstitutt. Skrifter. (1991.), Vol. 195 (1991) |
Abstract: | High-density nesting on small islands in years with late break-up of sea ice appeared to be forced response to limited number of nesting islands available. Prediction that eiders would choose to disperse maximally if provided with more space was tested, on Prins Heinrichøya and Mietheholmen, during six years (1982-87) of generally favourable ice conditions. Results indicated that nesting females did disperse when provided with more space, but response was both slower and less complete than predicted, which may be result of "site tenacity". |
