Record #110945:
Breeding population size of the Common Eider Somateria mollissima in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, 1981-1987 / Fridtjof Mehlum.
Title: | Breeding population size of the Common Eider Somateria mollissima in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, 1981-1987 / Fridtjof Mehlum. |
Author(s): | Mehlum, Fridtjof. |
Date: | 1991. |
In: | Norsk Polarinstitutt. Skrifter. (1991.), Vol. 195 (1991) |
Abstract: | Total number of breeding pairs fluctuated between 1,000 and 3,400, depending on sea-ice conditions in fjord. In seasons with late break-up (1981 and 1986), fewer eiders occupied their breeding islands. Proportion of breeding pairs on each island also varied: in years with early ice break-up and snow-melt, majority of eiders nested at relatively low density on largest island; in years with late break-up and snow-melt, most of breeding birds inhabited smaller and outermost islands. Egg-clutch sizes varied with laying dates, with smallest clutches late in season. |
