Record #110938:

High serum selenium concentrations in reindeer breeding Lappish men / Jetmund Ringstad, Jan Aaseth, Knut Johnsen, Egil Utsi, Yngvar Thomassen.

Title: High serum selenium concentrations in reindeer breeding Lappish men / Jetmund Ringstad, Jan Aaseth, Knut Johnsen, Egil Utsi, Yngvar Thomassen.
Author(s): Ringstad, Jetmund.
Aaseth, Jan.
Johnsen, Knut.
Utsi, Egil.
Thomassen, Yngvar.
Date: 1991.
In: Arctic Medical Research. (1991.), Vol. 50(3) (1991)
Abstract: Reports investigation in Karasjok (northern Norway) of relationship of serum selenium to its dietary sources: group of 20 healthy Saami men had higher concentrations than 20 non-Saami men. Serum selenium correlated positively with consumption of reindeer meat, age and cholesterol. Saami men ate more reindeer meat and less fish than men in control group. (Consumption of reindeer meat was also correlated with high serum cholesterol levels.) Concludes that high serum selenium concentrations in Saami men may be important, since low mortality from cancer is reported in this group.
