Abstract: Recent studies in McMurdo Sound show that diatoms excrete water-soluble substance of high molecular weight that appears to absorb growing ice in platelet layer and causes dense pitting on platelet surfaces. Alteration of crystal surface in this way suggests substance may have role in sea-ice communities where ice surfaces are principal substrate.
