Abstract: | In October 1990, local leaders of Chukotskiy Avtonomnyy Okrug announced formation of own republic with aim of freeing it from control of authorities in city of Magadan. Mentions in particular Aleksandr Nazarov, chairman of Chukotka Executive Committee, who is keen to develop Chukotka's economy independently through exploitation of its resources (gold, fish, oil and reindeer), and closer links with Alaska. Recounts other interviews with Magadan journalist and also survivor of Kolyma camps. Describes current attempts to rehabilitate prisoners. |
