Abstract: At 50 cm depth, pergelic soils have mean annual temperature lower than 0°C and may have permafrost. Reviews terminology pertaining to permafrost and related periglacial features, summarizes existing data relative to distribution of pergelic soils in USA, and proposes new criteria for their classification.
