Winter in a Svalbard fiord ecosystem / Jan Marcin Wȩsławski, S. Kwasniewski, J. Wiktor.
Title: | Winter in a Svalbard fiord ecosystem / Jan Marcin Wȩsławski, S. Kwasniewski, J. Wiktor. |
Author(s): | Wȩsławski, Jan Marcin. Kwasniewski, S. Wiktor, J. |
Date: | 1991. |
In: | Arctic. (1991.), Vol. 44(2) (1991) |
Abstract: | Study based on data collected at Polish Arctic station at Hornsund (Spitsbergen). Winter was defined in terms of climate (November-May), hydrology (January-March) and biology (November-March). Characteristic phenomena include winter drop in yearly biomass maximum to 0.1% for phytoplankton and 10% for zooplankton, slowing of growth rate among pelagic and hyperbenthic dominants, and heterotrophy among living phytoplankton cells found in middle of polar night in densities of 10-50 cells/L. About 1% of eiders, fulmars and kittiwakes overwinter, feeding in open water of polynyas and crevices in fast ice. |
