Abstract: Over region where SAR look direction is parallel to wind vector, relationship between ocean-scattering cross-sections measured by Geosat altimeter and SAR is obtained. Where wind direction is changing, estimate is derived from differences measured between altimeter and SAR-scattering cross-sections. Significant wave height measured by Geosat altimeter is compared with buoy measurements and used to assess validity of significant wave height deduced from SAR.
