Heat flux at the ice-ocean interface / J.S. Wettlaufer.
Title: | Heat flux at the ice-ocean interface / J.S. Wettlaufer. |
Author(s): | Wettlaufer, J. S. |
Date: | 1991. |
In: | Journal of Geophysical Research. (1991.), Vol. 96(D4) (1991) |
Abstract: | Role of oceanic heat flux in sea-ice energy and mass balance is discussed, and method described for determination from measurements of temperature and thickness of sea ice. Results of using this method and data collected in autumn 1988 during drift in eastern Arctic, north-east of Fram Strait, are presented. Estimates ranged from 0 to 37 W m⁻² and varied in time and space. Gradual variation over course of drift reflects transformation of West Spitsbergen Current into Arctic water masses. Significant intersite variability on horizontal scales of 10 to 100 m is ascribed to interaction between under-ice topographic features and turbulent energy and mass transfer in boundary layer. Also, there is variability in ice-growth rate on horizontal scales of 0.1 to 1 m which is ascribed to instability of ice-ocean phase boundary in presence of turbulent flow. Appendix deals with ice-growth rate interpolation. |
