Record #110287:

Classification of snow cover and precipitation using the special sensor microwave imager / Norman C. Grody.

Title: Classification of snow cover and precipitation using the special sensor microwave imager / Norman C. Grody.
Author(s): Grody, Norman C.
Date: 1991.
In: Journal of Geophysical Research. (1991.), Vol. 96(D4) (1991)
Abstract: Describes instrument which was flown aboard polar-orbiting satellite on 19 June 1987. Detailed study was performed to determine best selection of channels for identifying snow cover and precipitation. Multiyear sea ice and glacier ice also considered. Resulting algorithm takes form of decision tree which uses dual polarized channels at 1g GHz and vertically polarized channels at 22 and 85 GHz. These four channels enable identification of precipitation from all other atmospheric and surface features, including snow cover.
