Abstract: Work now in progress to determine interannual variability of sea-ice extent from 1973 to present, using several satellite-mounted sources. Algorithms exist to convert raw brightness temperature data to sea-ice concentration and extent. Particular attention paid to DMSP SSM/I data during period July 1987 to March 1989. Computer-generated sequence shows differences in rates of ablation and growth inherent in Antarctic sea ice and absence of previously measured Weddell Sea polynya.
