Record #110278:

Ionic chemistry of five decades of snowfall at the Newall Glacier, Asgard Range, Antarctica / K.A. Welch, Paul A. Mayewski, J. Dibb.

Title: Ionic chemistry of five decades of snowfall at the Newall Glacier, Asgard Range, Antarctica / K.A. Welch, Paul A. Mayewski, J. Dibb.
Author(s): Welch, K. A.
Mayewski, Paul A.
Dibb, J.
Date: 1991.
In: Eos : transactions, American Geophysical Union. (1991.), Vol. 72(17 (Supplement)) (1991)
Abstract: Snow samples from two snowpits on this glacier in south Victoria Land were analyzed for major ion composition and for total β-activity. Snowpits were 3 km apart, with 100 m difference in elevation. Records covered period of 50 a, and can be used to determine average annual snow accumulation and flux of ions to this site. Data indicate that accumulation rate at lower site is 1.5 times that at higher site. For some ionic species (Cl, K, Mg), total flux is directly proportional to accumulation. However, for non-sea salt SO₄, concentration is higher at site with lower accumulation, so both locations have same flux.
