Remote monitoring of thermal structure and growth of shore-fast ice off the Labrador coast / Ingrid Peterson, Stuart D. Smith, Simon J. Prinsenberg, Ralph H. Orton.
Title: | Remote monitoring of thermal structure and growth of shore-fast ice off the Labrador coast / Ingrid Peterson, Stuart D. Smith, Simon J. Prinsenberg, Ralph H. Orton. |
Author(s): | Peterson, Ingrid. Smith, Stuart D. Prinsenberg, Simon J. Orton, Ralph H. |
Date: | 1991. |
In: | Cold Regions Science and Technology. (1991.), Vol. 19(2) (1991) |
Abstract: | Prototype monitoring platform, designed to measure air temperature and temperature profile of sea ice, and to transit data via satellite, was used to obtain information on ice thickness and growth through 1988 ice season (January-May). Rate of release of heat of fusion due to accretion of new ice at lower surface was found to be nearly equal to upward conductive heat flux through ice, indicating that organic heat flux was negligible. Ice growth rates were compared to those predicted by "freezing degree day" formulae. |
