Record #110198:
The glaciation of the Shetland and Orkney islands / Donald G. Sutherland.
Title: | The glaciation of the Shetland and Orkney islands / Donald G. Sutherland. |
Author(s): | Sutherland, Donald G. |
Date: | 1991. |
Publisher: | Rotterdam, Brookfield: A.A. Balkema |
In: | Glacial deposits in Great Britain and Ireland. (1991.), |
Abstract: | Since Peach and Horne (1879) confirmed Croll's early hypothesis on nature of glaciation here, evidence has accumulated that suggests some modification of original ideas, although no similarly coherent, simple hypothesis can be advanced. Some evidence for Scandinavian ice exists in north and south of islands, but this is unlikely to have occurred during last glacial maximum. Last glaciation of Shetland was that of local ice cap, while Orkney was overridden by Scottish ice, northerly and then northwesterly. Text references to other publications at end of volume. |
Notes: | In: Glacial deposits in Great Britain and Ireland / Jürgen Ehlers, Philip L. Gibbard, Jim Rose, eds. |
Keywords: | 551.33 -- Glacial geology. 551.336 -- Ice ages. 551.79 -- Quaternary. E7 -- Glaciology: glacial geology and ice ages. (411) -- Scotland. |
