Record #110181:

The sea ice thickness distribution in the northwestern Weddell Sea / Manfred A. Lange, H. Eicken.

Title: The sea ice thickness distribution in the northwestern Weddell Sea / Manfred A. Lange, H. Eicken.
Author(s): Lange, Manfred A.
Eicken, H.
Date: 1991.
In: Journal of Geophysical Research. (1991.), Vol. 96(C3) (1991)
Abstract: Studies carried out October and November 1988 to assess snow and ice thicknesses on regional scale, determine geometric roughness parameters for top and bottom surfaces of sea-ice floes as aid to inferring drag coefficients, and interpret ice-thickness data in terms of sea-ice evolution in this area. Four classes of thickness distinguished: strongly deformed first-year ice, less deformed first- and second-year ice, and deformed second- or multiyear ice. Each class is characterized by specific set of quantities related to ice texture and surface snow characteristics, and by distinct probability density functions for snow and ice thicknesses. In addition, geometric surface and bottom roughness differ for each class.
