Abstract: | In order to develop operational method for extraction of ice-velocity vectors from sequential AVHRR imagery, maximum cross-correlation method is combined with spatial filtering technique on image-inferred ice-motion vectors. Cross-correlations between images are computed directly from image brightness values rather than computing fast Fourier transforms. By using combination of statistical and spatial filters, coherent ice-motion vectors in presence of cloud-contaminated imagery can be retrieved. Series of six satellite images of Fram Strait for April 1986 was used to compute sea-ice motion from pairs of sequential images. Resulting ice-motion vectors were taken as representation of surface flow field derived objectively from satellite imagery. Resulting vector motion fields matched well with manually tracked vectors for same images, thus verifying validity of MCC method. Correction noted in ibid., Vol. 96, No. C5, 1991, p.8917-8920. |
