Record #110151:
Polar ice cores and climate history / David A. Peel.
Title: | Polar ice cores and climate history / David A. Peel. |
Author(s): | Peel, David A. |
Date: | 1991. |
In: | Weather. (1991.), Vol. 46(4) (1991) |
Abstract: | Points out value to studies of present and future climate of ice cores recovered from polar ice sheets. Atmospheric conditions are preserved in ice in three ways: isotopes (principally stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen), soluble and insoluble aerosols scavenged by snowfall or deposited on surface by dry deposition (continental dust, sea salts, volcanic shards and acids, extraterrestrial material and traces of industrial pollution), and bubbles of air containing atmospheric gases. From this evidence, past climates can be deduced and events during last glacial cycle can be followed. Cores also give clues on related factors that may have been implicated in changes, either causally or by contributing to positive feedback processes that amplify responses. |
