Abstract: Small runway was reconstructed using 2-in (5-cm) thick layer of extruded polystyrene insulation, while nearby town road was reconstructed to conventional, non-insulated cross-section. Monitoring instruments were installed during construction and, following construction, surface elevation grid was installed for monitoring frost heave. Discusses performance of these surfaces over four winters.
