Abstract: Account of work of Dr. Ted Mala who set up Siberian Medical Research Program at University of Alaska in 1982 to improve standard of health care in Alaska and Siberia through exchange of medical knowledge. Discusses some problems of Soviet doctors especially due to outdated equipment and chronic shortages of materials, but also mentions pioneering work in Siberia on orthopaedic surgery.
