Source mechanism of the 1987 Vatnafjöll earthquake in south Iceland / Ingi Th. Bjarnason, Páll Einarsson.
Title: | Source mechanism of the 1987 Vatnafjöll earthquake in south Iceland / Ingi Th. Bjarnason, Páll Einarsson. |
Author(s): | Bjarnason, Ingi Th. Einarsson, Páll. |
Date: | 1991. |
In: | Journal of Geophysical Research. (1991.), Vol. 96(B3) (1991) |
Abstract: | Earthquake of 25 May 1987 was largest to occur in Iceland since 1976. Foreshocks and aftershocks define elongated N-S epicentral area 12 km long and 4 km wide, with hypocentral depths mostly between 6 and 13 km. Rupture initiated near base of crust and propagated upward along approximately 10 km long fault, but did not reach surface. Centroid depth is well constrained and is between 5 and 8 km depth at 95% confidence level. Seismic moment is 9.1 x 10²⁴ dyn cm. Source has relatively short duration of 3 s, which may indicate higher stress drop than global average of earthquakes of this size. |
