Abstract: Detailed studies have been completed at 28 sites lying on approximate flowline extending 760 km across ice shelf. Parameters measured include ice velocity, thickness, principal strain-rates, surface elevation, temperature and accumulation rate. Data used in steady-state model to derive basal mass flux and temperature profile with depth at each site. Pattern of basal melting and freezing is consistent with simple model of sub-ice-shelf oceanic circulation, involving deep thermohaline convection cell. Circulation has implications for formation of Antarctic Bottom Water and for response of ice shelf to driving stresses, through temperature-dependent viscosity of ice.
