Record #109628:

Eider exploitation by hunters and trappers on Svalbard during the 19th and early 20th centuries / Gustav Rossnes.

Title: Eider exploitation by hunters and trappers on Svalbard during the 19th and early 20th centuries / Gustav Rossnes.
Author(s): Rossnes, Gustav.
Date: 1991.
In: Polar Record. (1991.), Vol. 27(160) (1991)
Abstract: Discusses accuracy of amounts of uncleaned down officially registered as imported to Norway (mean 1300 kg annually). Accounted for 7--10% of annual income of over-wintering trappers. Competition for down and eggs between trappers and crews of sealers and whalers resulted in steady decline of eider population, which was protected by legislation in 1963. Several bird sanctuaries were designated in 1973. Historical records have too many lacunae to permit reliable assessment of success of these measures.
