Abstract: It used to be held that settlement was quite late, in 14th and 15th Cents. Article explains how work of Jouko Vahtola, in particular, has altered picture. He has studied name material to distinguish Karelian, Swedish, German, Norwegian and Saami elements and to set up not merely relative, but absolute dating of settlement. Pentti Koivunen has found on Tornio river, in Kainuunkylä, farming settlement from c. 1100 AD. Sheila Hicks has pollen dated human traces in Hailuoto to c. 1050 and cultivation to 13th Cent. Other results from Tornionjokilaakso Project noted, include Kainuu / Kvenland and birkarl questions. Results are linked to discoveries at Novgorod and Lake Ladoga.
