Abstract: Wood charcoal and potash manufacture were secondary occupations of Finnish peasant in pre-industrial times. Author developed criteria for distinguishing types of hole, when mapping hole remains in parish of Pello. If charcoal pit accidentally burnt to ashes, it could still be used to make potash. It is evident that potash was made at turn of 18th and 19th Cents for local blast furnaces.
