Record #109469:

Translated title: Thoughts of war years which shaped a generation - North Calotte and security politics.
Author(s): Synnergren, Stig.
Lassinantti, Gunnar.
Date: 1990.
Publisher: [Sweden]: Interculture
Language: Swedish.
In: Nordkalott. Ragnar Lassinanttis perspektiv. (1990.),
Abstract: WW2 came to Norway bringing surprises for Sweden. Article explains how lessons for Sweden included responsibility of whole nation for its defence, and how threat of nuclear retaliation kept peace. Socialist monolith is starting to crack, but many threats to peace remain, including economic. Second part describes hopes of peace after WW1 and pressure of events to change from pacifism and build up defences. This was easier to do in North Calotte, especially among Tornedal Kven, and Lassinantti, despite Communist backing, protested at Soviet nuclear tests in Arctic. Winter and Continuation wars and their effects are described. NATO replaced any possible Scandinavian pact. Lassinantti's contribution to Nordic Council and North Calotte conferences, which he saw as avoiding garrisons, is noted. Crucial role of Gorbachev in detente is noted. Environmental threats include nickel mines and Chernobyl. Events of 1989 are described in postscript. Gorbachev's restructuring means, however, build-up of forces in Novaya Zemlya.
