Record #109350:

Katabatic winds in Schirmacher Oasis, East Antarctica / M. Lal.

Title: Katabatic winds in Schirmacher Oasis, East Antarctica / M. Lal.
Author(s): Lal, M.
Date: 1990.
Publisher: New Delhi: India. Department of Ocean Development
In: Proceedings of Workshop on Antarctic Studies, May 3-5, 1988. (1990.),
Abstract: Discusses typical night-time extraordinary windiness condition recorded at Maitri Hill Station in area during summer activities as part of sixth Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica (1986-87). Also presents application of equations of motion for such flow to explain how wind speed and angle between wind and line of maximum slope can be determined from knowledge of surface topography, characteristics of surface inversion and by effect of surface friction and Coriolis force. Numerically derives relationship between maximum wind speed attained in katabatic flow, strenth of temperature inversion and steepness of icy terrain with special reference to area region.
