Abstract: North Calotte is Europe's most civilised wilderness. People settled along Atlantic coast even during Ice Age, then Saami migrated from east and Germanic peoples from south. Grand nature and hard climate have strongly affected development of varying local cultures. Transnational ties are example of possible way forward for Europe. Sections treat of Tornedal, security of Calotte, human perspective, some individual opinions in interview, development planning and finance, dramatic changes in one municipality, glimpse into future, and some drastic historical events.
