| Abstract: | Brief overview of Antarctic research activities (1959-90) of German Democratic Republic (GDR). In this period political background was such that not until 1987 was autonomous station Georg Forster declared. Logistic support and scientific cooperation of Soviet Antarctic Expedition (SAE) were of great significance. Scientific research includes meteorology (particularly ozone studies), ionospheric research, hydrology and palaeoglaciology by isotope studies, geography, geodesy, biology, medicine, geology, gravimetry and geomagnetics. |
