In situ measurements of BrO in the Arctic stratosphere / D.W. Toohey, J.G. Anderson, W.H. Brune, K.R. Chan.

Title: In situ measurements of BrO in the Arctic stratosphere / D.W. Toohey, J.G. Anderson, W.H. Brune, K.R. Chan.

Abstract: Mixing ratios of BrO have been measured in Arctic lower stratosphere with instrument mounted on NASA ER-2 aircraft. Observations from 14 flights above Arctic Circle in January and February 1989 defined mixing ratios within vortex of 4±2 pptv at potential temperature of 400 K, rising to 8±2 pptv at 470 K. Over Iceland and Greenland, both BrO and ClO profiles strongly resemble those obtained over Antarctica. Measurements demonstrate that interaction of bromine and chlorine could represent major sink for ozone in presence of sunlight.
