Abstract: Summarizes current knowledge. Four intervals in palaeogeographic history distinguished, each characterized by different marine connections between Arctic and world ocean: 1. Mesozoic (Arctic northern gulf of Pacific); 2. Late Cretaceous and early Palaeogene (Arctic more or less completely isolated); 3. late Palaeogene to middle Pliocene (Arctic connected to Atlantic but not to Pacific); 4. middle Pliocene to present (since opening of Bering Strait)
