Record #107053:
The origin of spongy ice / Lasse Makkonen.
Title: | The origin of spongy ice / Lasse Makkonen. |
Author(s): | Makkonen, Lasse. |
Date: | 1990. |
Publisher: | Espoo: Helsinki University of Technology |
In: | IAHR. The 10th Symposium on Ice, August 20-24, 1990, Espoo, Finland. Proceedings. (1990.), Vol. 2. |
Abstract: | Proposes that solid fraction of spongy ice is equal to ratio of projection area to surface area of tip of dendrites that grow into supercooled liquid. Shows that thermal balance and growth requirement for tip of dendrite provide estimate of solid fraction. Theory suggests that solid fraction is insensitive to growth conditions. |
