Record #106767:

Difficulties in deducing temporal changes in precipitation chemistry from snow and ice cores: the spatial variability problem. Paper presented at the 8th Northern Res. Basins Symposium/Workshop (Abisko, Sweden - March 1990) / R.C. Metcalf, D.V. Peck.

Title: Difficulties in deducing temporal changes in precipitation chemistry from snow and ice cores: the spatial variability problem. Paper presented at the 8th Northern Res. Basins Symposium/Workshop (Abisko, Sweden - March 1990) / R.C. Metcalf, D.V. Peck.
Author(s): Metcalf, R. C.
Peck, D. V.
Date: 1990.
In: Nordic Hydrology. (1990.), Vol. 21(4-5) (1990)
Abstract: Depth profiles of chemical impurities in snow and ice are usually interpreted in terms of temporal changes in atmospheric concentrations. Measurements of pH and conductivity from individual snow stratigraphic layers sampled above 2600 m indicate local spatial variation in these parameters could be sufficiently large to mask temporal changes inferred from depth profiles. Inferences concerning past climates based on assumed temporal chemical variations for given depth profile are, therefore, suspect. Presents method for calculating number of samples of any given stratigraphic layer necessary to obtain required precision about mean pH in vertical ice profile.
