Record #106310:

On the ethnogenesis of the Sami: an archaeological view / Vladimir Ya. Shumkin.

Title: On the ethnogenesis of the Sami: an archaeological view / Vladimir Ya. Shumkin.
Author(s): Shumkin, Vladimir Ya.
Šumkin, Vladimir Ja.
Date: 1990.
In: Acta Borealia. (1990.), Vol. 7(2) (1990)
Abstract: Archaeological evidence supports view that Saami have their origins in Palaeo-European population that settled in northern Fennoscandia in early Holocene. Environmental conditions compelled them to choose distinctive pattern of development, which permitted them to preserve their ethnic consciousness and certain elements of their traditional culture. Theories about former wide distribution of Saami (Proto-Saami) and their involvement in ethnogenesis of other peoples are doubtful. "Lop'" of territories farther south had other ethnosocial roots and presumably were not single ethnic formation.
