Record #105482:

Geomorphic impact of spring avalanches in northwest Spitsbergen (79°N) / Marie-Françoise André.

Title: Geomorphic impact of spring avalanches in northwest Spitsbergen (79°N) / Marie-Françoise André.
Author(s): André, Marie-Françoise.
Date: 1990.
In: Permafrost and Periglacial Processes. (1990.), Vol. 1(2) (1990)
Abstract: Illustrates use of persistent snow cover as debris trap to estimate debris accretion due to snow avalanching. Field observations carried out, 1982-86, in glacial cirques from Kongsfjord area suggest differences in erosional effects of spring avalanches depend primarily on morpho-structural factors, e.g. it is much higher on dissected mica shist walls than on steep and smooth gneissic walls. Points out that annual snow avalanches rearrange debris by scraping scree slopes, while episodic slush avalanches form long-lasting boulder tongues.
