Record #105358:
Small cetaceans in Greenland: hunting and biology / Mads P. Heide-Jørgensen.
Title: | Small cetaceans in Greenland: hunting and biology / Mads P. Heide-Jørgensen. |
Author(s): | Heide-Jørgensen, Mads P. |
Date: | 1990. |
In: | North Atlantic Studies. (1990.), Vol. 2(1-2) (1990) |
Abstract: | Seven species of small cetaceans are frequently caught. No accurate statistics of annual catches are available. Harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena), narwhals (Monodon monoceros) and white whales (Delphinapterus leucas) are of significance for Inuit subsistence hunting, so political will to implement sound management strategies is important. Data for biological studies of narwhals and white whales are collected routinely by Greenland Fisheries Research Institute. Discusses case history of Baffin Bay population of white whales. |
