Title: Deployment strategy for satellite tracked drifters to support iceberg drift forecasting / Mona S.S. El-Tahan, B. Sanderson, S. Venkatesh.
Author(s): El-Tahan, Mona S. S.
Sanderson, B.
Venkatesh, S.
Date: 1990.
Publisher: Southampton: Computational Mechanics Publications
In: Ice technology for polar operations : proceedings of the Second International Conference on Ice Technology, held at Downing College, Cambridge University, UK, during 18-20 September 1990. (1990.),
Abstract: Strategies for deployment of Tiros Ocean Drifters (TOD) in order to derive measurements of ocean currents for iceberg forecasting off Canadian east coast include (1) amount and type of human activity, (2) variability and knowledge of ocean currents, (3) density of iceberg population, and (4) expected trajectory of TODs relative to where they are needed. Development of ocean currents database is essential to (2) and (4). Based on these factors, desirability index that includes need for TOD data in particular area is developed, leading to formulation of deployment strategy.
