Record #105117:

Ramming icebreaker performance of the USCG Polar Class icebreakers / Peter V. Minnick, James W. St John, R.P. Voelker, Thomas Forhan.

Title: Ramming icebreaker performance of the USCG Polar Class icebreakers / Peter V. Minnick, James W. St John, R.P. Voelker, Thomas Forhan.
Author(s): Minnick, Peter V.
St John, James W.
Voelker, R. P.
Forhan, Thomas.
Date: 1990.
Publisher: Southampton: Computational Mechanics Publications
In: Ice technology for polar operations : proceedings of the Second International Conference on Ice Technology, held at Downing College, Cambridge University, UK, during 18-20 September 1990. (1990.),
Abstract: Tests carried out in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, in January 1989 in order to collect full-scale data for development of mathematical model which could be used to predict icebreaker's overall speed of advance while ramming and to determine optimum operational approach to maximize vessel's progress through ice. Method of analyzing data is presented including resulting expressions for penetration distance and time, backing time, and ramming charge time as functions of ice conditions, propeller thrust, and ship characteristics.
