Record #105009:

Ice lens orientation around a chilled buried pipe / Sharon L. Smith, Peter J. Williams.

Title: Ice lens orientation around a chilled buried pipe / Sharon L. Smith, Peter J. Williams.
Author(s): Smith, Sharon L.
Williams, Peter J.
Date: 1990.
In: Collection Nordicana. (1990.), Vol. 54 (1990)
Abstract: Observed in temperature-controlled facility. Comparison of ice-lens pattern to isotherm pattern in section perpendicular to pipe axis indicated that, while chilled pipe influences orientation near pipe, it is not the only factor controlling pattern; variations in soil density and mechanical properties of frozen soil also influence this. Appears that heave consists of vertical and lateral components, and displacement of pipe is result of pipe being squeezed as well as being lifted by vertical heave generated directly below it.
Notes:

Collection Nordicana. Vol. 54 :83-87 (1990).

Keywords: 624.139.22 -- Frost heave.
