The Faroese catch of the long-finned pilot whale. Bias shown of the 280 year time-series / Dorete Bloch, Kjartan Hoydal, Jákup Sverre Joensen, Petur Zachariassen.
Title: | The Faroese catch of the long-finned pilot whale. Bias shown of the 280 year time-series / Dorete Bloch, Kjartan Hoydal, Jákup Sverre Joensen, Petur Zachariassen. |
Author(s): | Bloch, Dorete. Hoydal, Kjartan. Joensen, Jákup Sverre. Zachariassen, Petur. |
Date: | 1990. |
In: | North Atlantic Studies. (1990.), Vol. 2(1-2) (1990) |
Abstract: | Written statistics of catches go back to 1584, they may be incomplete between 1584 and 1641, there is a gap from 1641 to 1708, but from 1709 statistics are unbroken. Discusses different social changes that can affect statistics. Studies show clear correlation between occurrences of prey, long-finned pilot whale, Globicephala (Traill), and periodically long-term differences in water temperature around Faroe Islands. There was a general increase in efficiency between 1800 and 1982, then catches became subject to restrictions. |
