Abstract: Schools of pilot whales, Globicepala melas (Traill), spotted close to land are driven ashore. Meat and blubber are shared free for local human consumption, and drives take place as long as there is need. Describes succession of events of which Faroese pilot whaling consists. Reports on characteristics of 43 drives and kills that took place during 2-year period of intensive scientific sampling on fishery, during which all schools were found within 4 nautical miles of shore, average driving time was about 2 hours, and average dispatching time for pod was 27.7 minutes.
