Record #104991:

The importance of biological parameters in population assessments with special reference to fin whales from the N.E. Atlantic / Christina H. Lockyer.

Title: The importance of biological parameters in population assessments with special reference to fin whales from the N.E. Atlantic / Christina H. Lockyer.
Author(s): Lockyer, Christina H.
Date: 1990.
In: North Atlantic Studies. (1990.), Vol. 2(1-2) (1990)
Abstract: Considers importance of biological parameters in context of density-dependence, exemplified by fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) taken in Icelandic fishery, and makes comparisons with other large marine and terrestrial mammals. Changes over time in growth rate and mean age at sexual maturation in Icelandic fin whale may be linked to major climatic trends such as mid-1960s climatic reversal in northern North Atlantic. Fluctuations in parameters such as reproductive rate appear to be correlated with body-fat condition, and this is also reflected in weight at length of foetuses. Mortality rate and recruitment rate (to fishery) also appear to vary over time. Recommends combination of biological and environmental monitoring.
