Record #104988:

Flight against erosion / Gudhmundur Sv. Hermannsson.

Title: Flight against erosion / Gudhmundur Sv. Hermannsson.
Author(s): Hermannsson, Gudhmundur Sv.
Date: 1990.
In: Iceland Review. (1990.), Vol. 28(4) (1990)
Abstract: Account of history of soil erosion in Iceland and of Soil Conservation Service's efforts to prevent desertification from their base at Gunnarsholt, Rangárvellir, south Iceland. Main causes are livestock grazing, volatile soil, harsh climate and volcanic eruptions. Up to 40,000 km² of grasslands have disappeared since country was first settled and vegetation now covers just one quarter of total area of 103,000  km². Icelandic parliament, Althing, passed legislation in 1907 on afforestation, and measures to hinder destruction of vegetation. Primary emphasis was on prevention of sand drift. Aerial seed-sowing has been carried out since 1958, using Douglas DC-3 aircraft. Land Reclamation Forests Campaign has been launched this year.
